Dental Cleanings and Exams
Dental Cleanings and exams are the best things you can do for your teeth on a routine basis. We examine the gums and other supporting structures of the teeth including the periodontal ligament, gingiva, cementum, and the alveolar bone during your dental cleaning and exam. Because our dentists use state-of-the-art lights to detect cancer at its earliest stages during your oral cancer screening, we can prevent issues before they occur. The American Dental Association recommends you see one of our dentists every 6 months to perform a dental cleaning and exam.
Our dentists and hygienists perform deep cleanings when there is an infection below your gum line. As a result, we can often save teeth that would have been lost. A deep cleaning is different because it addresses the area below your gum line and the outer surface of the roots.Â

Gum Disease
Acuity Dental can evaluate and diagnose gum disease. We examine the gums and other supporting structures of the teeth at your regular dental visits.
Untreated disease can result in significant problems including infection, bone loss, shifting of teeth and loss of teeth. The American Heart Association has linked cardiac problems and heart attacks to gum disease.
Why Do I Need a Deep Cleaning?
Gum disease is caused when plaque builds up and works its way under the gum tissue. This can cause the gum to pull away from your tooth and cause a pocket. These pockets fill with more plaque and can get to the point where they are no longer able to be cleaned with at-home care. In untreated, this can lead to bone and tooth loss.
A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is performed by our dentists and hygienists and can remove this plaque and the hard deposits it leaves (tartar). This results in healthier teeth and gums.
If our dentists treat this promptly, the gums will heal and regular home care and dental cleanings can prevent this from happening in the future.
